A review is only worth as much as the process behind it. Anyone can repeat a label or paraphrase a product page. What is rare, and what DetailVerdict is built on, is genuine hands-on evaluation by people who detail vehicles for a living. This page explains exactly how we test, how we score, and how we keep our verdicts honest, so you know our recommendations are earned rather than guessed.
Our principles
Every review we publish follows four non-negotiable principles.
Hands-on, or it does not count. We do not review products from spec sheets or marketing copy. If we recommend something, it has been used on real vehicles by Sean, by LB, or by a trusted detailer in our network. Our background in aircraft detailing, where finish standards are exacting and failures are costly, sets the bar for how carefully we evaluate everything.
Real-world conditions. Products are tested the way you will actually use them, on real paint, real wheels, and real interiors, in normal working conditions. A product that only performs in a climate-controlled studio is not much use in your driveway, and we say so.
The verdict can be no. Plenty of products do not make the cut. We would rather recommend three genuinely good options than pad a list with ten mediocre ones. A short, trustworthy list beats a long, padded one every time.
Independence. Affiliate commissions never influence a score. We disclose every relationship on our Affiliate Disclosure page, and we routinely recommend against products we could earn money on when they do not deserve the recommendation.
What we evaluate
The specific criteria vary by product type, because what matters in a ceramic coating is not what matters in a wash mitt. In general, our reviews weigh the following:
- Performance. Does it do the job it claims, and how well? This is always the heaviest factor.
- Ease of use. Is it forgiving enough for a beginner, or fussy and unforgiving?
- Durability and longevity. How long does the result actually last? Critical for waxes, sealants, coatings, and dressings, where marketing claims and real-world performance often diverge sharply. We report realistic numbers, not headline ones.
- Value. Performance relative to price, including cost-per-use for concentrates and consumables. Expensive is not automatically better.
- Safety. Is it safe for your paint, your surfaces, and you? Years of working to aircraft standards make us pay close attention to what a product can quietly damage, and to the safe handling of strong chemicals.
The testing process
For most products, our process follows a consistent path. We start with clean, properly prepared surfaces, because a fair test demands a fair starting point. We apply the product following the manufacturer's directions first, then note where real-world use diverges from the instructions. Where it matters, we compare the product directly against the established options in its category, because a verdict is far more useful in context than in isolation. For anything where durability is part of the claim, such as a coating or sealant, we live with the result over time rather than judging it the day it goes on. Then we record what held up, what faded, and what we would tell a friend.
Our verdict system
To make our conclusions easy to act on, each product earns one of a few clear verdicts:
- Verified Pick. Our top recommendation in its category. If you buy nothing else, buy this.
- Worth It. A solid, dependable choice we would happily use ourselves.
- Situational. Good for specific needs, budgets, or skill levels, with clearly stated caveats.
- Skip It. Does not justify the money or the risk. We will tell you why, and what to buy instead.
How we choose what to test
We prioritize the products people are actually searching for and buying, alongside notable new releases worth a close look. Reader and viewer suggestions carry real weight in that decision. If there is a product you want us to put through its paces, tell us, and it may well be next on the bench.
Independence and updates
DetailVerdict is reader-supported, and we are transparent about how that works on our Affiliate Disclosure page. No brand pays for a placement, a score, or a kind word. Detailing products also change, as formulas are reformulated and better options arrive, so we revisit our reviews over time and update our verdicts when the facts change. When a review has been updated, we note it, so you always know how current our recommendation is.
Who does the testing
DetailVerdict is run by two people who do this professionally. Sean runs a private and corporate aircraft detailing company and has been an automotive enthusiast his entire life. LB brings more than twenty years of professional aircraft detailing experience and has served as training director for an aviation detailing organization, having personally used a remarkable share of the products on the market. Between them, our recommendations come from real hands and real standards. You can learn more about us on the About page.
